The 6 Best Romance Anime on Netflix (and 5 Honorable Mentions)

Hi Score Girl

Teaser Trailer for Hi Score Girl

How many episodes are there?

12+3 OVAs.

Are more coming?

Yes, in October 2019.

What’s it about?

Hi Score Girl is one of the newest romantic comedy Anime Netflix has on its platform. It’s set in the 1990s and follows a vapid gamer, who, as it often happens with Anime heroes, tends to get over excited and shouts a lot. At an arcade he meets Akira, another gaming enthusiast, who he starts a rival-like relationship with, that over time turns into a romance.

Is it good?

It’s alright. The story is pretty standard for your typical romantic Anime, with love triangles and over-emotional characters. The main character starts out rather annoying and develops into a more bearable person over time. Their relationship is very sweet in an innocent sort of way.

In terms of art-style Hi Score Girl is pretty interesting. It’s thick lines and simplistic models are the sort of thing that you either hate or love. But it is distinct and definitely fits the story and setting.

Ouran High School Host Club

Are any more coming?

No

What’s it about?

Ouran High School Host Club follows Haruhi, a student at the prestigious Ouran Academy, who, looking for a quiet room to study, stumbles into the Ouran Academy Host Club. This club, lead by 6 male students, gathers to entertain female clients with candy and tea. After accidently breaking a vase, Haruhi has to work at the Host Club to pay her dept. However, since she is female, she has to dress up as a boy to be a host. High-jinx and such of course ensue.

Is it good?

Similarly to Hi Score Girl, Ouran High School Host Club has a very simple, yet well-developed art style. The scenes are very lively, with characters almost bursting out of each image and tons of stuff going on. It’s a wacky show, with an art style that suits it perfectly.

Also, what starts out as a very over-the-top comedy Anime does start to layer some surprisingly deep character developments into the story over time. It never becomes super dramatic or complex, but there is more going on than one might think after the first few episodes.

The humor is kind of a mixed bag and as typical for these sorts of Anime you will either enjoy it or find it grating.

Flavors of Youth

How many episodes are there?

It’s an Anthology movie, with 3 separate episodes.

Are more coming?

No

What’s it about?

Flavors of Youth is an anthology film, telling three different stories, all of which are set in China.

In the first story the protagonist Xiao Ming tries to recapture a sense of nostalgia for his childhood with his dying grandmother, whom he used to eat noodles with.

The second story revolves around two sisters supporting each other through trials and tribulations in the fashion industry. With both of them struggling to make it work in this cut-throat environment.

The last segment starts out in the late-90s, with two children supporting each other through school. Because of some tragic circumstances they lose touch but never forget each other and possibly get a chance to reconnect in the modern-day.

Is it good?

Flavours of Youth is a lovely movie about nostalgia, love and support. Only the last segment really hits the romance angle, but even still, it’s a movie worth watching for sure. It’s very sentimental, trying to channel Makoto Shinkai’s work, but not always successfully.

But still, although it is not an amazing film, Flavours of Youth is worth watching. The stories are all lovingly brought to live, with very detailled background art and great voice acting.

Your lie in April

What’s it about?

This show revolves around child prodigy and piano master Kōsei Arima, who was taught to always play the piano note perfect exactly as written. When his mother suddenly dies, he loses his hearing due to emotional distress and stops playing.

He stops playing the piano until meets the free-spirited girl Kaori. She is everything that Kōsei isn’t, full of life and passionated. Thanks to her, he picks up playing the piano again. He soon realizes that he is in love with her, but unfortunately she only sees him as a friend and is romantically interested in his best friend.

Is it any good?

Yes.

Your Lie in April is a definite recommend. The show is way more grounded in reality than most other entries in this list. Its characters are flawed but very human. And the drama is deeply rooted in the tragedies that occur in most lives.

Be aware, though, Your Life in April is a pretty sad show, with a lot of dramatic twists and turns, that will leave you either frustrated or lying in fetal position, sobbing. There is some humor too, but the show really likes to push your buttons with the drama.

Your Lie in April is animated by A-1, who are already known for their flawless, imaginative style. And they won’t let you down on this one either. Your Lie in April is a gorgeous Anime.

Vampire Knight

No

What’s it about?

This Anime is all about a boarding school, that separates its pupils into two groups: Those who have classes during the day, and those who have them at night. As is not hard to predict by the title of the show, the night class is actually full of vampires. The romantic leads Yuuki Cross and Zero Kiryuu are on opposites sides and lead their respective classes, with Yuuki being a human, who protects the Day-class against Vampires and Zero being a vampire who tries to keep the Vampires in check.

Is it good?

Not really. As much as the setup starts out interesting, the series really suffers from under-developed characters and a cliched plot. You can see some potential shining through every now and then but it seems like with every step forward, the story takes two back.

The art-style is your pretty stereotypical wide-eyed Shojo type, that’s not particularly inventive but not bad either. The same can’t really be said for the lacklustre animation. Overall you might want to skip that one.

Violet Evergarden

How many episodes are there?

13+OVA

Are more coming?

No

What’s it about?

Violet Evergarden revolves around the title character, a so-called Auto Memory Doll, who was first used as a soldier in war and later to write emotional letters for people who cannot write themselves. However, Violet struggles with understanding human emotion as is not capable of writing the letters in the way she is supposed to.

As the story progresses, Violet sets out to meet different people and learn about love and humanity. All the while more and more of her tragic backstory is revealed.

Is it good?

Yes, but not necessarily as a romance Anime. The central theme of Violet Evergarden is love. No doubt about that. But that love comes in a lot of different forms. There certainly is some romance, but it’s far from the traditional “will-they-won’t-they” you might have come to expect from traditional Romance Anime.

Instead Violet Evergarden sets out to tell a very layered and deep story of differend kinds of love, that between parents and their kids, friends and also partners. Violet’s journey of discovery is deeply moving and sensibly told, through both an overarching narrative as well as small vignettes.

Technically, Violet Evergarden is absolutely stunning, with some of the best Animation of any Anime on Netflix. The colors pop off the screen and the music is pitch perfect.

Honorable Mention (Non-Romance Anime with interesting/weird Romance aspects)

The Irregular at Magic High School

The Irregular at Magic High School takes place in a world where magic exists alongside technology. The two protagonists, siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, are students at the first High School that teaches magic. Besides the different battles they have to survive, the story focuses strongly on their relationship.

Oh, Anime and incest. Yes, there is a brother/sister relationship that does get a little uncomfortable at times. And it’s pretty central to the show, so if that sort of thing makes you uncomfortable: Skip that one.

There are also tons of other relationships and romance subplots going on. What’s interesting: Instead of all female character swooning over the stoic main character (as happens so often in Anime) there is a variety of will-they-won’t-they’s with different characters going on, which is a nice change of pace.

Death Note

Death Note is a must-see in any case, but there is a lot of weird romantic stuff going on. The main character, a psychopath, who gets god-like powers with which he can basically kill any person he wants, starts a relationship pretty early on into the series. However, unlike other romances, while the girl in this case, is madly in love with him, he exclusively uses her for his own gain. So there you have it, if abusive relationships are your thing, go watch Death Note (and maybe get some help, just saying).

The Devil Is a Part-Timer!

The very descriptive title already kind of tells you what this one is all about. It’s about Satan having a part-time job – at a fast food joint. Yes, the devil needs to make some money and unfortunately his evil powers don’t work on earth, so all that’s left is going to a McDonald’s like burger chain.

This one is mainly focused on comedy, but there is a romance sub-plot with your typical love triangle situation going on.

Fairy Tail

Main character Natus has the skills of a Dragon Slayer, a form of Lost Magic that gives him special powers. He rescues travelling mage Lucy from a band of slavers. After introducing her to the Fairy Tail guild, they decide to band together and perform various missions offered by the guild.

Fairy Tail, in many ways, is a pretty prototypical Shounen Anime. But considering it’s genre the show surprisingly does delve quite a bit into it’s romances. So if you are looking for some good battles that has an occasional bit of relationship development sprinkled in, you might be right at home with Fairy Tail.

Kuromukuro

By accident scientists revive a medieval period samurai, who warns them against a horde of demons, that will threaten their world. High school student Shiragane Yukina gets involved, when he is mistaken for someone else and together with the power of mechas called Kuromukuro they put together a team to stand against the demons.

Being a pretty average Mecha-Anime, Kuromukuro isn’t really an obvious choice in terms of romance. And, really the romance isn’t that much of a focus point of the show. However, compared to other shows of that type, Kuromukuro does have a larger focus on characters and relationships and there is a pretty central romance that plays out nicely during the show.
